How To Learn English (Speaking, Reading, Listening, Writing)

There are many ways to learn English depending on your learning style so I took a look at Google and found some of the more popular search terms to give me an idea of what people are searching for and creating a resource for them so they can learn in a way that is beneficial and helpful but most importantly fun and engaging for them.

Here is a list of the keywords I found along with my recommendation of how best to proceed with an English learning strategy. Please note the keywords are not grammatically correct and have some spelling mistakes but I wanted to use actual keywords for this article so the people searching can find this resource easily rather than Google guessing what they are looking for.

The first keywords I found were:

  • Why is important learn English
  • Why important to learn English
  • Why learn English is important

So looking past the grammar and spelling, as we will do for all subsequent examples, why is English important and why should we consider studying it? The main reason we need to learn English is as a universal translator when interacting with speakers from different countries. Yes, we have tools like Google translate and other apps to help us when we need to bridge the communications gap but most commonly English is used as the go-to language due to the early technological rise in English speaking countries such as the USA, the UK, and India (where English is widely spoken), therefore many computerized systems are coded in English as a result.

Leading on from this we have 2 secondary factors and these are business and travel. As previously mentioned the computerized world has an English language base and this has bled out into the business world with English being used as a common business language for the most part. Travel also has adopted English as a standard where many large tourist cities have many bilingual workers in the many cafes, restaurants, stores, and related businesses.

  • How to learn English on Youtube

Learning English using Youtube can be an inexpensive way to improve your listening and comprehension skills. To make the best use of this application I recommend a few tips to help you get the most out of your time on Youtube.

Firstly, find a topic that you are interested in and search for that topic. One of the keys to successfully learning English is that you enjoy doing so, if you find it tedious, annoying or unpleasant then I suggest you try learning about something you like in English so you are happy while studying.

Secondly, I recommend clicking on the cog icon to bring up the settings. In the small settings menu, you can select subtitles. Subtitles will help you activate more of your brain by allowing you to read and listen at the same time. By doing this you can increase your learning efficiency by up to 15%. Next, if you are still at an earlier level and you find that people are just speaking too quickly then use the settings to change the playback speed to 0.75. This will let you hear them speak a little slower and will help you catch every word spoken without changing their voice too much.

  • Learn english by song

If you are a music fan the learning English using song lyrics can be a bonus for you. Be careful to not make the mistake of just listening to the words as you can often mishear some words which can create correctional problems down the track. Get a copy of the song you like and sing/read along as you go. You will memorize the song in no time if you enjoy it and the sentence structure and grammar will be with you forever.

  • Learn English by movie
  • Movies for learn English

Watching movies can be another great way to improve your English skills but like Youtube, it’s important that you find something you will enjoy watching. Unlike Youtube, there are often no ways to slow down the movie to make it easier to catch each and every word. In this case, you may want to watch the movie a few times with your native language subtitles showing and then later switch to English subtitles.

Another tip when watching movies is to avoid anything fast or action-related if possible, loud sound effects can sometimes obscure the speaker’s voices so you may miss what they are saying. Dramas or slow-paced movies will be better for your learning experience.

  • Short story to learn English

If you Google short stories you will be able to find many stories posted on the internet as well as many great articles on almost every subject imaginable. As mentioned I recommend picking a suitable topic that you are interested in and try searching for that topic with a phrase like short stories about science fiction or short stories about Spain.

  • Tips on how to learn English

If you are starting from scratch then I would recommend using the sentence list I mentioned above from Tim Ferriss. It will get you to speak English well in a very short time. If you are a little further along then using the Youtube, song, and movie methods can greatly improve your grammar and vocabulary in a short time. I also recommend reading as a very good way to get comprehensible input. Grab a book, again, in a genre or topic you are interested in and get started.

The last and best way is to speak to native English speakers if you can. If you feel like you are forcing obligation into them why not ask for a language swap? You will find someone easily who is looking to learn your language as much as you are theirs.

  • Feel good learn English

Like most things we tend to avoid doing things we are not keen on or downright hate and studying is no exception so it’s important to try to have fun while you are learning.
